Spartans Win Fifth Consecutive Big Ten Championship
MSU headed to the University of Wisconsin for the Big Ten Championships this past weekend to defend their title against a competitive field consisting of seven teams. The Spartans were matched up against the host team Badgers from Wisconsin for their first game of the tournament. MSU started slowly, but turned up the heat in the second half with a few key goals to take the crowd out of the game and put the game out of reach. With this 9 to 5 win, the Spartans advanced to the semifinals where they would face the University of Illinois, a team that had already beaten MSU earlier in the season. The Spartans knew they were in for a fight right from the first whistle. A couple of quick goals in the first half enabled MSU to take an early lead and the Spartans never looked back. A combination of relentless defense by sophomore Jake Marsh and stellar goalkeeping by junior captain Ben Shantz forced Illinois to take bad shots and limited their time of possession. The Spartans disposed of the Illini by a score of 8 to 3. With these two wins, MSU earned a place in the championship game against their archrivals from the University of Michigan. The Spartans scored two quick goals in the first quarter, but the Wolverines came right back with two goals of their own to tie the game. At halftime the score was tied with the game coming down to which team wanted it the most. After trading goals back and forth, the fourth quarter ended with the score tied 5 to 5. In order to settle this tie, the game went into overtime. The team at the end of the overtime periods with the most goals would win a Big Ten Championship and earn a place at Nationals. A combination of key goals from the three left-handers (Tim Wickes, Eddie Rogers, and Nick Talaski) and the team’s will to win enabled Michigan State to finish on top 8 to 7. The Spartans claimed their fifth consecutive Big Ten Championship and a bid to Nationals in Florida where they will look to defend their title. MSU would also like to congratulate the University of Michigan on a great season and for participating in a memorable Big Ten Championship game that will be talked about for years to come.

MICHIGAN STATE STEAMROLLS THE COMPETITION AT GVSU
The Spartans were back in the water this past weekend (Oct. 9–11) after a two-week hiatus. In their final tournament before Big Tens, the Spartans were out to prove that they are still the top team in the conference. The first game on the slate was against GVSU “B.” The team jumped out to a fast lead and never looked back. Everyone on the MSU roster got some playing time in the game as the Spartans won big 13 to 2. The next game on Saturday featured nationally ranked UIC. Just like in the previous game, MSU got out to an early lead and kept the pressure on throughout the entire game. This enabled the team to win by a margin of 11 to 3. Key contributors in the game were sophomore Jake Marsh, senior Carly Boudah, and freshman Robert Spiegel. In the nightcap, the Spartans were matched up against the Masters team 616 from the Grand Rapids area. MSU had already been defeated by 616 earlier in the year at the Spartan Invite, so they came out looking for revenge. After an intense battled that went back and forth throughout the game, the Spartans ended up victorious due to the game winning goal by Mike Scarcelli in the last minute of the fourth quarter. Also, junior captain Ben Shantz came up big in the cage with some key stops in the last quarter. In the championship game on Sunday morning, the Spartans found themselves against the host team from GVSU. MSU knew they were up for a fight against this nationally ranked team. The Spartans found themselves down by a goal for the majority of the game, but rallied in the second half due strong efforts by sophomore Jake Marsh and senior captain Andrew Olesnavich. As the final buzzer went off, MSU came out on top 9 to 8 in a closely matched game. Overall, the weekend was a success as the Spartans went 4-0 against some tough competition from around the Midwest. Next on the schedule is Big Tens on October 24-25 as the Spartans go on the road to the University of Wisconsin where they will look to defend their Big Ten title.

SPARTANS GET BACK ON TRACK AT IOWA TOURNAMENT
The team headed to the University of Iowa on September 26-27 for their second conference tournament of the year. The Spartans were out for blood as they wanted to show the Big Ten that they were still the top team after a disappointing showing at Purdue. Saturday morning the team faced the Hoosiers from Indiana. The Spartans took the lead right from start and never looked back, winning 8 to 5. The next foe was host team Iowa, who were looking to upset MSU in their home pool. The Hawkeyes kept it close throughout the first half, but the Spartans turned it on in the third and fourth quarters. A combination of stellar defense and contributions from the second string enabled MSU to pull away and win 11 to 6. In the nightcap, the Spartans faced off against the Badgers from Wisconsin, who had upset the MSU football team earlier in the day. Determined for revenge, MSU came out strong, but could never pull away from the Badgers. Timely goals in the second half enabled the Spartans to get a couple-goal lead which ended up being enough to win the game 10 to 7.
On Sunday morning, MSU found itself playing against Purdue University for the first time this season. The Spartans put the pressure on from the first whistle and got out to a 6 to 1 lead due to goals by Andrew Weichmann and Andrew Olesnavich. A balance of stellar defense and cohesion on offensive led to numerous opportunities for the team to increase its lead. The Spartans finished the game strong and won 19 to 7. Special recognition goes out to junior Thomas Spoto, freshman Andrew Leonard, and freshman Jordan Ringold who all stepped up in the four games this weekend. The Spartans conclude the Big Ten Division regular season with a 6-2 record and an overall record of 10-3.
In addition, Michigan State University senior captain Andrew Olesnavich received Big Ten Division Player of the Week honors for his performance at Iowa. The Birmingham, Michigan native tallied 12 goals, 10 assists, and 14 steals in a 4-0 weekend for the Spartans, who clinched the No. 3 seed for the Big Ten Division Championship to be held at the University of Wisconsin on October 24-25. 9/28/2009

Spartans Stumble in Season's 2nd Tourny
With preseason's toll setting in, the Spartans headed to Purdue September 12–13 with a limited roster due to illness and injury. Despite optimistic attitudes the Spartans found themselves in a 3-1 hole after 2 quarters with the Michigan Wolverines. A never-say-die attitude, a sound performance by captain Ben Shantz in net, and key goals by Eddie Rogers and Chase Plank brought the margin to one, but time elapsed before the Spartans could complete their comeback and the Wolverines walked away with a 4-3 win—their first victory over the Spartans since 2005. read more…
